Special Needs Adaptive Aquatics - Stop Drowning Now

Learn about why educating about drowning prevention is important.

Special Needs/Adaptive Aquatics

Every child, regardless of ability, deserves protection in and around water. Yet, for children with special needs that may not be able to communicate, yell or scream when involved in a water incident, a tailored approach of learning how to swim and water safety is crucial.

Special Needs Drowning Facts
    • Drowning is the #1 cause of death for children with autism. The drowning rate for those with Autism is 160x greater than those who are typically developing.
    • Children with Autism are drawn to water because of its natural peace and tranquility.
    • For children with a dual diagnosis of Down syndrome and autism, the risk of drowning is more than double that of a typically developing child (Source: Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia)

Swim Angelfish has developed a Water Safety for All Abilities Teaching Resources and Adaptive Toolkit that acknowledges these unique needs and abilities, offering specialized practices to prevent accidents and promote inclusion. With a focus on practical strategies and empowerment, the toolkit ensures that all children can enjoy the water safety.
